Brief History

The territory known as Seattle today was inhabited by Duwamish Indian tribes long before European settlers arrived in the mid-1800s. Originally, the tiny village was named Duwamps after the Duwamish Indians. However, it was changed to its present name in about 1853 named after Indian Chief Sealth. During the month of May, you will want to attend the Annual Northwest Folklife Festival.
